Color 101 Tutorial

Each month we offer a "Color Add On" to go along with our kits.
The Color Add On varies each month, so that our customers can try new techniques and colors each month.  Some months are mostly mists, and others include paints, inks, and other mediums.  And we always include one item for you to use those colors with - such as stamps, masks, or canvas.
Lisa Novogrodski has created a fabulous video tutorial titled "COLOR and TEXTURE 101- A beginners guide," for those who are new to using color in their work and need to get their feet wet!

So what's stopping you, jump right in and start having fun with some color!

Stalker Challenge Winner

The winner for this round (Nov-Jan) for the Stalker Challenge is
Beth aka Rabbit51
for her "Rock-On" lo.
The prompt for this round was bringing back some of the hippie slang from the late 60's and 70's.  Beth used the "Purple Haze" kit to make this totally fun and hippie page.  She scrapped  Janis Joplin which is totally far out!!!  This design is really hip and groovy.  Congrats Beth, thank you for sharing this awesome page with us!

December Winter's Eve Sketch Winner

The winner for this month's sketch challenge is Julie aka Jules 61 with her page called "Love".

This page is just super romantic and gorgeous.  Julie really went the extra mile making her own flowers and doing some hand stitching for her butterfly trails.  The photo is of her stepson, Warren and his partner, Lisa, which is really darling and sweet.  Julie really did an excellent job with Suepup's sketch, cutting up the Bo Bunny paper for the large circle, was a brillant idea.  Lots of love and care went into this page.  Big congrats Julie!!!!

Big News and January Reveal!

It's Reveal Day again, and there is a lot going on at Scraps of Darkness!  Before I get started with the reveal of our January kit and a few new tutorials, I wanted to share some news that I am really excited about.

We are expecting a new baby!  No, nobody here is pregnant, as far as I know, but Scraps of Darkness is going to have a new little sister!

On February 1st, we will reveal a new line of kits, Scraps of Elegance.  These kits will be a little different from what you are used to seeing from Scraps of Darkness, and we are honored to have a very talented surprise guest designer who will be helping us to show off our first Scraps of Elegance kit.  In addition to that (as if that isn't a lot!), we'll be having a blog hop to kick it all off, so set your calenders to stop back on February 1, 2012!

And now for the Reveal Day business...

Tired of winter - the cold, the snow, and maybe even want a break from all those Winter layouts?  Well we've got the perfect getaway for you... our January Escape kit, featuring all those gorgeous papers from Graphic 45's Tropical Travelogue collection and Pink Paislee's Nantucket collection!

Stop by our website to see what you get and all the available add ons, and read on to the bottom of this post for your chance to win this kit.

Suepup has done another gorgeous sketch for this kit, which I am happy to share with you, and the ladies on our design team are just rocking this kit with inspiration for you!

Want tutorials, we've got some awesome new ones for you!  Renea has done not one, but two new video color tutorials, and Nancy's done a fabulous Pandora's Box video tutorial for this month's kit.  You can see all 3 of them now on our Tutorials page, or check back over the next week, as I'll be posting them one by one right here.

My next bit of news is not as fun as the rest has been... I'm very sad to say that Nancy's Design Team term ended with our December kit, and Nancy feels she needs a little break from the deadlines of being a Designer, so she is taking a little vacation from designing.  Fear not, though!  Nancy will still be scrapping with our kits, and so she will still be inspiring all of us with her gorgeous work!
Thank you, Nancy, for all you've done for Scraps of Darkness during your time on our DT - you know we all love you!

And now, for your chance to win our January Escape Main Kit!

Beginning this month, Dr. Darkness (aka my husband - who really is a doctor), will present me with a challenge to post.  This challenge will revolve around color (our color add on is and has always been our signature kit add on, after all) and a theme - hence the name of the monthly challenge:  Dr. Darkness' Interpretation Challenge.

Here are the rules/guidelines...
Rule # 1 - No silly blog badges here.  We're going to give you top-notch scrappy stuff you can use in your creative endeavors!  This month's prize will be our January Main Kit - Escape.

Rule #2 - This challenge is open to anyone who would like to enter - you don't have to subscribe to our kits, and you don't have to buy anything from our store.  The only thing we ask is that you don't mention any other kit clubs in the title of your layout/altered item or the description of it and that you do state that it is for the Scraps of Darkness Dr. Darkness Interpretation Challenge.

Rule #3 - The dates of this challenge:  This challenge begins today, January 15, 2012, and ends on February 10th, 2012.  The winner (chosen by Dr. Darkness, himself) will be announced here on our blog, on February 12, 2012.

Rule #4 - The challenge involves mediums - we want to see you use your inks, mists, and/or texture mediums to create a layout or altered item that revolves around a theme.  This month's theme word is "fade". Interpret that word any way you like when completing your project, but make sure you use inks, mists, and or texture mediums on it.

Rule #5 - Once your project is completed and uploaded to any online galleries you participate in or on your blog, stop back and leave a comment on this blog post and give us a link telling us where to find your entry.

Rule #6 - Check back here on February 12th to see if you're the winner!

February's challenge will be posted on our blog and forum on February 10th.

Good luck, and I can't wait to see your entries!

December Layout of the Month

The layout of the month for December is:

"LOVE" by Amy Garrett

The movement of the this page is remarkable, it looks like it just came out of the ocean with all the layers of waves to enjoy and get lost in.  Amy used the "Winter's Eve" kit, showing off all sorts of the yummy Bo Bunny Enchanted paper line.  The photo Amy scrapped is of her dh and dd.  It really stands out with the distressed edges and color adjustment, and of course that little chained hook that caught hold of the photo.  Those circles at the top of page really catch our eye, adding lots of interest to this fabulous design.  Amy, big congrats to you and thank you for sharing your work with us!

Vintage Winter Follies by Jennifer Snyder

Aren't they just beautiful?!  You can also find this tutorial, along with many other tutorials by the fabulous ladies on our Design Team on our website:  Scraps of Darkness Tutorials

I also wanted to give you a little heads up... we have a big announcement coming along with the reveal of our January kit on January 15, so be sure to stay tuned!

Scrap that Title Winner

Happy New Year Dark Siders!!!!

Here at Scraps of Darkness, we are offering a new challenge called "Scrap that Title".  The prompt for the first round was "Souless or Soul-less".  Very deep and creepy right?

We would like to congratulate Ashley aka Ashleyvanetten for being the winner of this  very fabulous, dark and sinister page:

This page just gives us all the creeps!!!   The photo of  the 2 webs is really outstanding and it is a super creative capture.  Ashley's design just comes to life, or for this matter "death".    She used the "All Hallow's Eve" kit to make this very scary and "Souless" page.  The bg really stands out with her unique stitch technique.  Of course you can't miss out on her love for paints/mediums, and here, she used black paint, gel medium, stickles, and smooch ink around the border making a fabulous texture.  Congrats on winning Ashley!!!
